USER GUIDE FOR SPELLWORD

CAREWARE Version 1.0

Janet & John Ansell

INTRODUCTION

SPELLWORD is a word processor and dictionary program especially
developed for children of primary school age. It requires an Acorn
Archimedes with the RISC OS and compatible printer.

GETTING STARTED

To load SPELLWORD place a working copy of the SPELLWORD disc in a disc
drive and click on the disc icon then double click on the !SPELLWORD
icon.

When loaded the top half of the screen is used as a dictionary area and
the bottom half is used as story area (see diagram). The story area can
contain over 100 lines although only 7 of these are displayed at any
one time.

The dictionary area is divided into sections. The first page contains
the letters of the alphabet, punctuation and the most common of the
Breakthrough words. The following pages contain the rest of the
Breakthrough words and then many pages of dictionary words in
alphabetic order.

The mouse is used to find words in the dictionary and copy them to the
story area. To find a word in the dictionary move the mouse pointer to
the word's first letter in the alphabet area and press menu (middle)
button on the mouse. The dictionary words starting with this letter
will appear on the screen. You move up or down through the words in the
dictionary using the THREE ARROW symbols. When you have located the
word you need press select (left) button on the mouse and it will
appear in your story area.

If the word you require is not in the dictionary then type it in using
the keyboard. If the correct ending is not there press the menu button
on the mouse and see if the ending is in the dictionary. If the word is
there move the mouse pointer to it and press select and it will appear
in the story area, if not type it in using the keyboard.

SCREEN ICONS

The following is a description of the icons available on the screen
(see the attached screen dump). To use them point at them using the
mouse and press menu (middle button).

Clicking on is defined as moving the mouse pointer to the required icon

		beginning of the dictionary area.

EDITING

Moving the cursor is most easily done using the mouse. (You can also
use the keyboard arrows if you prefer.)

If text is required in a particular position on the screen e.g. for
poems this can be done using the mouse. Move the mouse pointer to the
required position and click on the menu button, the cursor will then
appear at this position ready for words to be input.

The text will format itself automatically within a paragraph so it is
not necessary to use the RETURN key unless you want a new line or
paragraph.

Point at the character you want to change in your text and press select
on the mouse. This will place the cursor under the required character.

DELETE Press the Delete key to delete the character at the
		cursor.

INSERT Either type in characters from the keyboard and these
will appear at the cursor or use the mouse to select a
word from the dictionary area and it will appear before
the character at the cursor. The cursor will move along
the line as characters are inserted.

CHANGE CASE Delete the character at the cursor with the delete key
and type it in again using the shift key to get the
		required case.

BACKSPACE Press the backspace key (right of ) and the character
to the left of the cursor will be deleted. This is
especially useful when typing from the keyboard as it
will delete the character just typed.

THE DICTIONARY FILE

The dictionary is stored in a file called DICTIONARY in the !SPELLWORD
directory. It can be amended using the EDIT utility on the RISCOS
applications disc.

The file has the following format:

Type a 0 in front of a word required on the first screen e.g.

	0for

This leading zero is removed by the SPELLWORD program.

Type a number(1 to 9) in front of a word required on the next few pages
of screen e.g.

	5this

These pages can be used for more very common words or could be used to
set up an area for special words relating to a specific project. This
leading numeral is removed by the SPELLWORD program.

To add a word to the main part of the dictionary simply type in the
word to be included. The root word is typed in first followed by up to
6 of its most common endings, e.g.

	apple apples
	fresh fresher freshest freshly
run running ran runs runner runners

Words can be added or deleted using the Edit utility. Once this process
is completed use the !SORT_DICT routine, in the !Spellword directory,
to sort the dictionary alphabetically. The words starting with 0 will
be first followed by the words starting with 1 through to 9 followed by
the rest of the words.

The dictionary is now ready to use with the SPELLWORD program.

Using the above programs dictionaries can be created for all different
age groups and abilities and can take into account special projects
being undertaken in a school.
